Thank God for all the quick sketches I did in college. They were called gesture drawings, and were done strictly in charcoal, maybe some conté crayons. Much later, in Minneapolis, MN, I studied sumi-e with Susan Frame, and after that, Chinese brush painting at the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, NC. All of this has helped in my ability to capture life quickly in watercolor.
