What I thought was a Great White Heron is rather a Great Egret. My research tells me that Great White Herons in the U.S. are rarely found outside of central and southern Florida. Below is an interesting fact that I found at https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Great_Egret/lifehistory

The Great Egret is the symbol of the National Audubon Society, one of the oldest environmental organizations in North America. Audubon was founded to protect birds from being killed for their feathers.
